Distractions are common especially during working hours. According to an article on LifeHacker.com, it takes 23 minutes to get back on task after you have been interrupted.
If you are interrupted 3 times during a day, you will lose more than an hour of productivity. I don’t know about you but most days I can’t afford to waste an hour.
There are some interruptions that can’t be helped but some are anticipated and can be worked into your schedule to keep from shipwrecking your productivity. For example, I work from home and care for my 3-year old granddaughter every other week. I found it was pretty hard to maintain my professionalism when talking with a client with a little one pulling on my shirt saying “Nana, I gotta go potty”. So now during the weeks when I have her, I schedule my client calls later in the day when another adult can help her with her needs.
Take a look at the things that interrupt your work flow. Are there any that you can anticipate and create a workaround strategy? Getting those lost 23 minutes back might be worth the effort.
