“Do You”. That was my answer to a recent concern voiced by one of my clients. The client was a little upset that their competitors had copied one of their ideas. The competition then used the idea to try to expand their product line and attract more clients. I told my client not to be too concerned for three reasons:
1. There are quite a number of people who provide the same service as you do but no one can do it quite like you. Part of your Unique Selling Proposition is the particular way that you provide service to your clients.
2 If people in your industry are imitating you, congratulations, you are now a leader in your industry (at least on the local level). How does it feel to be a trend setter? People are looking at you to see what services they should provide. How cool is that?
3. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. If someone is copying you, they are acknowledging that you have your “A” game going and they realize they need to step up their game to be competitive.
It’s good to keep up with the trends in your industry, but don’t spend too much time worrying about what your competitors are doing. Just do you and do it well. Your ideal client will find you. Remember you are a designer original. Anyone who copies you is a cheap imitation.
